Finding An Interp Piece

Whether you're a seasoned performer or new to speech, finding the perfect interp piece can be both thrilling and challenging. Whether you are looking for a prose, poetry, humorous, dramatic or a program of literature, there are some steps you should take to find a piece that both you and your judges will love.

Step 1: Know the Rules

State and national associations have rules about what can and cannot be performed. For NSDA, consult the Unified Manual. In California, consult CHSSA’s rules. In Texas, consult UIL rules or TFA rules, depending on the tournament you are attending. In Iowa go to IHSSA and so forth. If you need help finding your area’s rules, feel free to reach out, and I’ll do my best to help you. Generally, your school coach is the best source for this information, and you should always check your pieces’ eligibility with them as they will know the rules and guidelines for the tournaments that you are attending.

Step 2: Know Yourself

Before starting to look for pieces, take some time to reflect on your interests, passions, and strengths. What genres do you enjoy? Which characters resonate with you? What message is important to you? Understanding your personal preferences will help you narrow down your search and select pieces that align with your unique style and voice. The best pieces, in my opinion, say something about how the world should be.

Step 3: Explore Your Options

Now that you have a sense of what you're looking for, start exploring. Be willing to look into many different genres, from classic literature to contemporary plays, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Visit your local library, browse online databases, and attend performances to discover a wide range of materials to choose from. The best interpers read from many sources and are always keeping an eye out for possibilities.

Step 4: Read, Watch, and Listen

As you explore potential pieces, immerse yourself fully in the world of each work. Read the text carefully, paying attention to characters, themes, and dialogue. Pay attention to pacing, tone, and emotional depth to determine if the piece aligns with your vision.

Step 5: Connect with the Material

The key to a compelling interp performance is authenticity and connection. As you explore different pieces, ask yourself: Does this piece speak to me on a personal level? Can I relate to the characters or themes? Look for pieces that evoke emotion, spark curiosity, or challenge your perspective. The stronger your connection to the material, the better your performance will be.
